Elvis and Me

I found myself channel-surfing last night while I was waiting for Casualty to start when I came across Elvis, Black Leather being shown on Channel Five, not a channel I usually watch.  But last night, watch I did!

Oh boy!  To see such a legend close up and gorgeous, singing for an hour, accompanying himself on guitar for some of it, with no ear-pieces in or any of the vertigo-inducing camerawork that accompanies so many modern day concerts.  It was just Elvis.  His voice never wavered, didn’t miss a note.  Watching him, in his black-leather suit, every inch the rockstar, … Read the rest »

Rollercoaster

January is turning out to be a bit of a rollercoaster ride.  And like most rollercoasters, it’s fast and furious.  Today it is already 20th; eleven more days and it will be February.  Scary or what?  As Einstein said, ‘Time is an illusion.’ (I tell myself that every birthday.)  But is it an illusion that it definitely speeds up as one becomes older, or does it actually speed up?

So, ‘what’s made it a rollercoaster ride?’ I hear you ask.  The answer is that loads is going on and it’s all sooooooo exciting!  Professionally I’m involved with four projects now, … Read the rest »

We’re Turning

I know that language evolves and changes; English seems to do it even more so.  But I’ve noticed lately that nobody IS an age.  Suddenly everyone TURNS an age.  Last weekend we were told in the press that Rod Stewart had turned seventy.  Why couldn’t they just say that he was seventy or had become seventy or even had reached seventy?  And it isn’t just used about older people, either,  Last week I read an article about a child who had turned six.  Am I the only one to find this a bit strange not to mention  annoying?

It’s on … Read the rest »

Satan, Thy Name is Procrastination!

Today I had plans.  I was going to leap out of bed at an early hour, have some quick breakfast and then get on with one of the three writing projects I’ve got on the go at the moment.  Well, we all know what sometimes happens to the best-laid plans, don’t we?

It’s almost noon.  I have had a leisurely breakfast, caught the last part of Wanted Down Under and most of Homes Under the Hammer, answered a couple of e-mails, ordered a CD for the Daughter, spent half an hour – at least! – on Facebook, arranged lunch for … Read the rest »

Four Days Already!

We are four days into 2015 already!  And these days have brought very different mornings; one bright, sunny, frosty; one dull and overcast; one pouring with rain and this morning…….fog!  Amazing!  I am one of those people considered strange by many, who actually likes different weather.  One of the things I really love about living in England is the change of seasons, especially Autumn.  I love Autumn.  I love the colours, the ‘mists and mellow fruitfulness’ of it all and the fact that it is the run-up to Christmas.  Don’t get me wrong, I do love the sunshine, but sometimes … Read the rest »

Addiction for 2015

I am enjoying my second Duvet Day in as many weeks!  And it’s bloody marvellous!  The panto is OVER.  Yesterday I drove a one-hundred and sixty mile round-trip to Suffolk to take the costumes back to the wonderful Jemma at Costume Closet.  It had been my intention to go at 9am but I woke up to thick ice and frost and by the time I considered it safe it was half past eleven. Consequently, by the time I got home – 4.30pm, having stopped in Tesco on the junction of A12/A14 – it was dark and the day was over.  … Read the rest »

Duvet Day!

So, Christmas is almost upon us and I am indulging in what has become an Elaine Christmas Tradition:  a cold!  Every year I go down with something coldish or fluish just in the run up to the Big Day.  So, today I am having a Duvet Day.  Until five o’clock when I have to wend my way to the Brookside for Cinderella.  The feedback from our audiences has been really fab; they are all really enjoying it, as are the cast who boo, hiss, aahh, joke, sing, dance and act their way through two hours of great fun.  The only … Read the rest »

Dagenham Days, My Free Christmas Gift and Adrenalin Overdose.

The adrenalin rush I always get when a show approaches its run dates is something I love.  With the panto, it’s more than a rush; it’s an overwhelming, engulfing tsunami of emotions, nervous energy and stress.  I know it will be great.  I know that it will be a huge success because we’ve worked hard and I know we have a quality show.  I know that when it’s over I’ll be sad, feel as if something’s missing and, of course, hold the usual post-mortem.  My diplomacy and tact have been to the forefront these last few weeks, keeping my temper … Read the rest »

An Interview With………..Josephine Liptrott

Earlier in the year I went to the reading of a new play.  While I wasn’t exactly bowled over by the play itself, the leading actress, Josephine Liptrott, gave a real, honest, believable performance.  I quickly popped backstage to congratulate her; we befriended each other on Facebook, had a couple of long phone calls and then I read an article she’d written, which could have been written by me.  I agreed with every single word of it.  You can read it here:

The Man, The Beeb & The 100 Women List

Before I share her entertaining, intelligent and thought-provoking answers … Read the rest »

Cyber Assault

Good heavens!

To say I’ve been bombarded with unsolicited e-mails for the last week would be an understatement.  First of all, it was all about Black Friday.  Black Friday?  At first I thought I was misreading and it meant Good Friday, except I’d got my seasons all mixed up.  But no, it was this hideous free-for-all-imported-from-US day when tat or merchandise the stores wanted to shift went ‘on sale’.  I’m sure you saw the pictures and the newsreels which were beyond belief.  Then, these emails continued over the weekend for Cyber Monday, which is an extension of Black Friday but … Read the rest »
