Nervy Nibbles

Well, for months we’ve waited; tutting and sighing; treading water and losing hope.  And now, suddenly, the Land Registry have done their job and we’re completing on the sale of Mum’s flat this week.

It’s all too soon!

I know!  I know!  I’ve wanted it to happen.  But have I?  i honestly think there’s been a not-too-little part of me that has secretly hoped my financial circumstances would change and allow me to buy it.  No wonder the Universe doesn’t always deliver – I must confuse her terribly with my indecision over what I really, really want and what I … Read the rest »

The Sweetest Sounds

Oh yes!  What a sweet sound woke me up during the night – no idea of the time as I didn’t look at the clock.  I just sort of came out of sleep to realise it was raining.  Sweet, heavy raindrops were hitting against my bedroom window and then big, booming, treacley claps of thunder confirmed there was also a storm, which was, hopefully, clearing up the atmosphere a bit.

Don’t get me wrong – I love summer!  But, English summer.  Not the thinks-it’s-the-Caribbean summer of the last two weeks.  Yesterday afternoon was unbearable.  I sat in the garden with … Read the rest »

Bag-Lady Memories

Yesterday I spent the day on a film set making a commercial,  Well, two commercials, actually.  It was a long, hot day, but that’s the name of the game and if you don’t like the heat etc etc etc.

But one of the delights of yesterday was the food.  Now food on a film set can be really hit and miss.  But yesterday’s was a treat.  I would even venture to suggest it was bordering on the gourmet.  Growing up in Dagenham we would have described it as “posh food”.  Beautifully cooked and presented – an enormous salad table that … Read the rest »

The Joys of Summer

Last Thursday I came home to find the Sister up the alley with six burly firefighters.  As I said “Old habits die hard!”.  But this wasn’t just another excuse for her to get a cheap thrill; far from it.  The Sister was being a good citizen because she’d seen that the neighbour whose garden backs onto ours had left a bonfire unattended and it had caught one of the trees.  Now, I’m not criticizing, but you’d think the neighbours would have learned from such a close shave, wouldn’t you?  Well, no they haven’t!  Because anyone else’s enjoyment of sitting in … Read the rest »

Ten Hours Kip, Awesome Andy and Giggling All the Way Home

On Friday evening I had a really great time in the company of two old friends, J & S who I hadn’t seen for such a long time.  I’d completely forgotten how much I love their company and how funny S is telling a story.  I giggled all the way home.  Unfortunately, I’d also had a coffee ;with them after dinner and consequently was awake most of the night.

it was also the first anniversary of the night Mum died and I think that was also on my mind.  I actually turned and looked at the clock at 2:25am – … Read the rest »

Whirling Around and Watching Wimbledon

Well!  It’s been a funny old week and a half at what is almost turning into Wimblegeddon.  After all the injuries and shock-exits of last week – drum roll – Serena Williams out in the fourth round!  Who would have thought it?  I know that Sabine Lisicki is a good player; she’s put out big names in previous Wimbledons, including Sharapova and Li Na.  But Serena?   The list of quarter-finalists would probably have got you odds of 5000-1 before the championship started.  And it’s a bit like that in the men’s draw, too, although at least there the No 1 … Read the rest »

Your Very Own Les Dawson

Well, as I said on Facebook to much amusement – I am as happy as a flasher on a railway embankment!

Today, my backside has been stuck to the sofa.  I only got up to make a toasted bacon and tomato sandwich for lunch.  Yum!  I have indeed died and gone to Heaven!  Wimbledon and bacon and tomato sandwiches.  What more could a girl ask for?

Well, for Rafa Nadal to still be in, for a start!  What a shock exit yesterday.  It was obvious almost from the beginning that something was wrong.  He was limping and although he brushed … Read the rest »

Lonesome Mango and Strawberry Moon

In what has been a very tense, stressful week I was overjoyed to get this photo from my friend and neighbour in Antigua, S.  It is the FIRST EVER MANGO to grow on the tree to the rear garden of Avocado Cottage.  I planted the tree three years ago and for a while I thought it had died.  Yet it’s suddenly flourishing and has produced this large, round, perfect mango. My only sadness is that I didn’t make it to Antigua last week as I’d planned and then I could have picked and eaten it myself!!   Never mind!  No point … Read the rest »

Saturday is Special

I like Saturdays.  When I was young I used to think it was a magical day.  The day was one that you could spend doing whatever you liked free from the restraints of school and Saturday night was Big Night Out.  A dance at St Elizabeth’s Church Hall and I thought I’d died and gone to Heaven.  And yesterday was another magical Saturday; an emotional roller coaster…

I had a fabulous class with my Junior Dramas at Stages Studios.  The youngsters are so talented and I love teaching them and seeing what they’re capable of.  Magic.

And then a private … Read the rest »

Research, Wobbly Girl and a Train Ride to Nowhere

I’ve been forging ahead with Singles in India over the last couple of days, you’ll be pleased to hear.  I spent two hours yesterday afternoon researching wines of India.  It was quite fascinating and what I’d intended to be a quick look-up on the internet, turned into an in-depth read.  And what’s also interesting – well, to me at least! – is how fond I’m becoming of my characters.  Singles in India includes four characters my regular readers will already know from two of my previous books, plus a group of new ones.  I’d intended to have a couple of … Read the rest »
